Building on his successful run of “factory custom” FX models, Willie G. Davidson introduced the limited edition Harley-Davidson Sturgis FXB in 1980 to commemorate the famed motorcycle rally in South Dakota. The FXB Sturgis blended innovative engineering, classic design and contemporary styling into a sporty cruiser that has become quite collectible today. Ten years later, in 1991, Harley revisited the winning formula to debut its latest model, the Dyna Glide, with this handsome, limited edition FXDB Dyna Sturgis. Like its predecessor, the new Dyna Sturgis was built to celebrate the beloved Black Hills rally in Sturgis, which celebrated its 50th Anniversary in 1991, and much like it had with the original FXB Sturgis, Harley baked in a host of new technology for the occasion. The original FXB Sturgis ran in limited numbers from 1980 through 1983 and was built around the company’s 80 CI (1340cc) “Shovelhead” V-twin. With it, Harley-Davidson introduced a new chapter for its motorcycles with the debut of a belt final drive. Despite the public’s initial skepticism, the belt drive quickly proved more reliable, quieter and durable than chains and became standard for Harley-Davidson. For this 1991 reboot, the Motor Company again leaned into the brooding, blacked-out styling and rolled out new features, this time in an all-new chassis design designated as the Dyna Glide. The FXDB became Harley’s first official Dyna model, a line that proved to be a classic for the brand and is still prized by riders and collectors alike. The new FXDB Sturgis also marked the company’s first use of Computer- Aided Design (CAD), resulting in a chassis that was considerably stiffer with better handling overall compared to previous models. The third generation of the beloved FX line, the FXDB Sturgis, was built around Harley’s Evolution V-twin, the 80 CI (1340cc) successor to the “Shovelhead” and a 5-speed gearbox. Along with the new Dyna chassis, the engine and gearbox made the new generation FX models smoother and more comfortable while still embodying Willie G.’s original concept of creating a powerful cruiser with sportier, more agile handling. With an original sticker price of $11,520, the 1991 Sturgis FXDB sold for nearly double its older FXB sibling. Still, with only 1,546 Harley- Davidson FXDB Sturgis edition Dynas built in 1991, its only year of production, this attractive example is as rare and desirable as it is significant.
