Argentina is known for many things: tango, wine, beef and a motorcycle culture that runs deep. It’s also become known for its superb replicas of very special antique vehicles: Pur Sang builds note-perfect Bugatti Type 35s and Alfa Romeo 8Cs, and Comeback Motors Argentina builds superb replica 1916-18 Indian Power Plus road and racing models, and 1910 era Harley- Davidson belt drive singles. These aren’t static displays and the team at Comeback - Tomás Daniel and Carlos Macinskas – take pride in entering their creations in Argentinian long-distance vintage events as a demonstration of their prowess. This 1918 Indian Daytona Replica is the crown of their efforts, based on an original 1918 Indian 1000cc racer, but built with 100% modern materials using modern methods: the original Indian was 3D scanned, and every part reproduced 1:1 using contemporary casting techniques and CNC machining, in fact, Comeback claims that every single part on their Indians is made in-house except the Coker tires/tubes and Linkert carburetors. The founders of Comeback from Buenos Aires are Tomás Daniel, a vintage car and motorcycle collector, and Carlos Macinskas, a master craftsman mechanic descended from a long line of racing motorcyclists. Their project began in 2008; after winning awards at the Autoclásica show with their restorations, they encountered an original 1917 Indian board track racer and decided to make an exact replica, perhaps inspired by the success of the Pur Sang team. It took them ten months to build their replica, keeping the exact appearance of an original 1918 Indian, but working with the best contemporary materials and sub-contracted manufacturers. The resulting machines were immediately entered into the historic Recoleta-Tigre regularity race, which they successfully completed, proving that their products work. Inspired by their success, Comeback embarked on an ambitious program of producing three variations around the Indian Power Plus motor: a 1917 board track racer, a 1917 Power Plus road bike with full suspension, bodywork and lighting equipment, and a 1918 Daytona racer. Eventually, they also reproduced a 1911 Harley-Davidson single-cylinder belt-drive replica. They also supply parts for their machines and historic Indian Power Plus models, as while their crankshafts and connecting rods, for example, are made of modern steel, they fit directly into an antique motor, with the idea of parts interchangeability and ready spares supply paramount in their plans. Each component comes with an extensive technical folder and blueprints, materials specifications and quality control inspections. This 1918 ComeBack Indian Daytona Replica is to be applauded for the honesty of the Comeback approach, their rigor in maintaining quality and their commitment to providing the highest quality motorcycles and parts interchangeable with 100+ year old originals.
