A multiple winner of the National Corvette Restorers Society’s Top Flight Award, this CCAS-affirmed matching-numbers 1963 Chevrolet Corvette Split Window Coupe is one of only 278 1963 Corvettes produced with factory air conditioning, the first time it was made available for the Corvette. At $421.80, this single option added a whopping 10% to the coupe’s base price, a fact that combined with early production availability issues to limit sales. It is important to note that the air conditioning system offered in 1963 differed significantly from 1964 through 1967 Corvettes, with more than 25 system components being unique to 1963 models. A late production example built in July 1963, this Corvette was delivered new with Code 912 Silver Blue metallic paint over a Code 490XG Dark Blue vinyl interior, the “XG” on the car’s included original trim tag denoting a factory air conditioned coupe. The car retains its original, matching-numbers L75 327/300 HP V-8 engine, Powerglide 2-speed automatic transmission and 3.36:1 Positraction rear end, affirmed by Al Grenning’s Classic Car Affirmation Service. Its fulsome list of optional extras includes power steering and power brakes, power windows, aluminized exhaust, full spinner wheel covers, 6.70-15 white-stripe tires and two more features made available for the first time in a Corvette: Soft Ray tinted glass and an AM/FM radio. In the early 2000s the car received a body-off restoration that importantly revealed straight bodywork and a no-hit nose. The comprehensive restoration included rebuilding the engine and transmission, gauge cluster and mechanicals, a new wiring harness and new exhaust. More recently, the car earned NCRS Top Flight Awards at the regional level in 2019 and both regional and national levels in 2021, attesting to the great care taken in its preservation since the restoration. Recently acquired from the past owner of 22 years, this rare split window coupe incorporates most all factory-correct-type components and is well documented with the factory original XG-coded factory air trim tag, CCAS affirmation, warranty book, sales brochure, A/C operating instructions, owner’s manual packet, California (SPL63IT) license plates, copy of a 2001 California title, NCRS certificates and judging sheets, and a three-ring binder.
