As Carroll Shelby and Ford began parting ways, the final 1969-1970 Shelby GTs retained their distinctive identity with aggressive styling and rich interior appointments upholding the model’s performance-oriented, limited-production, grand- touring character. Delivering 290 HP, Ford’s enlarged 351 CI Windsor small-block V-8 engine powered the GT350 for its final 1969-1970 run. In addition to its low-maintenance hydraulic valvetrain, the 351W was equipped with a 470 CFM Autolite 4-barrel carburetor, an aluminum high-rise intake manifold and striking “Cobra – Powered by Ford” cast-aluminum valve covers. Functional Ram Air induction and a low-restriction dual exhaust enhanced breathing. Transmission choices included Ford’s Toploader 4-speed and the FMX 3-speed automatic. A 3.25:1 rear-end ratio was standard, supplemented by optional 3.00:1 and 3.50:1 Traction-Lok axles. Performance underpinnings included staggered rear shocks and heavy-duty brakes, while Shelby five-spoke wheels mounted fat Goodyear white-letter tires. Other 1969-1970 Shelby GT cues included a fiberglass front end with five NACA hood scoops, side scoops, a roll bar and rear spoiler, supplemented by a front spoiler for 1970. Just 788 Shelby GTs were allocated for the final 1970 model year, all built in 1969 but unsold and renumbered, including 261 GT350 fastbacks and 57 GT350 convertibles. Documented in the Shelby Registry and benefiting from a rotisserie restoration, this 1970 Shelby GT350 Convertible is one of the 57 GT350 convertibles sold for the 1970 model year and one of just 14 produced with Code F Gulfstream Aqua paint. Built on April 14, 1969 and delivered to Faulkner Ford Inc. of Nyack, New York, the Shelby’s original features included an FMX Select-Shift automatic transmission and 3.00:1 Traction-Lok rear axle. Options and amenities were many, including the power-operated black top with glass backlite, the Visibility Group, Goodyear tires, power front disc brakes, power steering, a Tilt-Away steering wheel, and the Interior Décor Group, the Deluxe interior with black upholstery, color-keyed racing mirrors, Heavy Duty Suspension and a tachometer and trip odometer. Desirable passenger amenities included SelectAire air conditioning, an AM radio, tinted glass and Deluxe seat belts with a warning light. A set of 15-inch, five-spoke Shelby wheels finish this highly optioned GT350 off, and original data, features and options are documented by a Deluxe Marti Report.
