With the Mustang growing in both size and performance by 1968, the GT package seemed a less than sufficient package for the available 428 CI Cobra Jet V-8 engine and special suspension. With the competition offering stripes, flairs, spoilers and striking color combinations, Ford marketing felt something had to be done to better compete. Working with engineering and styling, the Mach 1 debuted in late 1968 for 1969. It was only available as a fastback, featuring unique stripes, a louvered rear window, a specialized interior and a host of optional extras that set it apart from other Mustangs and the competition. Ford diligently campaigned the Mach 1 around the country at speed competitions, setting a long succession of speed and endurance records with professional drivers behind the wheel. Most notable among these might be the Bonneville entry with Hot Rod and Sports Car Graphic magazines, where Danny Ongais, Bob Ottum, Ray Brock and Mickey Thompson used three specially prepped Mach 1s to set 295 speed and endurance records in 500 miles and 24 hours. The best speed recorded was 188 MPH in a straight, flying kilometer course, but the average speed in that 24 hours was over 160 MPH. None of the cars broke, and each went on to race in other sanctions. Performance enthusiasts were smitten and wanted a Mach 1, a vibe that showed over 72,000 sold in 1969 and another 40,000 sold in 1970. While most had the 351 CI V-8 engine, a few had the optional Q-Code 428 Cobra Jet V-8 like this one. Boasting 335 HP and 440 lb-ft of torque, this 1970 Mach 1 underwent a comprehensive restoration, emerging in Medium Red with black striping, blackout hood treatment, locking hood pins, front and rear spoilers, window louvers, color-keyed twin sideview competition mirrors and more. Rolling on chrome Magnum 500 five-spoke wheels with Goodyear F70-14 Polyglas GT tires, the black interior features a wood-rimmed steering wheel with matching accents on the dashboard and door panels, bucket seats, a Philco radio, an in-dash clock and a floor-mounted gear lever for the 3-speed C6 automatic transmission.
