Developed at the suggestion of Rhode Island Ford dealer Bob Tasca and Hot Rod magazine editor Eric Dahlquist, the 428 Cobra Jet Mustang was developed to redeem the Mustang’s honor in the face of Chrysler’s Hemi cars. Released on April 1, 1968, the Cobra Jet option was a masterful combination of proven high-performance components within Ford’s parts bin. The 428 Cobra Jet was a huge success for Ford, both on-track and at dealer showrooms, with the option continued for 1969 and 1970. Further developments included functional Ram Air induction with a through-the-hood Shaker scoop. The 428 Super Cobra Jet upped the ante with heavy-duty internals, and for the truly committed, the Drag Pack added an engine-oil cooler and automatically kicked in when a 3.91 or 4.30 rear end was selected. Collector-owned for many years, this V-Code 428 Super Cobra Jet-powered 1970 Ford Mustang Mach 1 Fastback is one of only 114 examples produced. Never before offered for public sale, it clearly benefits from a recently completed, concours-quality rotisserie restoration. Finished in the very rare color combination of Code 6 Bright Blue Metallic paint with a Medium Blue vinyl interior, this immensely collectible Mustang is highly detailed throughout, including proper paint daubs, chalk marks and inspection stickers. Extremely rare Super Cobra Jet components were retained and restored, including the engine-oil cooler, relocated horns, larger harmonic balancer, carburetor and distributor. Heightening authenticity, the Mustang’s floor panels are finished in gray primer paint with factory-style overspray patterns. Crucially, the Mustang is powered by its original, matching- numbers 428 CI Super Cobra Jet engine, original, matching- numbers, close-ratio, 4-speed manual transmission, and original, matching-numbers 3.91 Traction-Lok differential. Power steering and power brakes with front discs handle the power. The original clock was professionally restored by The Clock Works. Other highlights include the rare tilt wheel option, rare front bumper guards, tinted glass, an AM radio and Deluxe seatbelts. Magnum 500 wheels mount period-style F70-14 Goodyear Polyglas white-letter tires and the original space saver spare wheel and tire is mounted inside the trunk. A framed Elite Marti Report, Deluxe Marti Report and owner’s manual document this exceptionally equipped and exceedingly rare Mustang.
