At just 8 miles, the odometer reading on this 2012 Ford Shelby GT350 Convertible might possibly qualify it as one of the lowest- mileage examples in existence today, but there is much more to this car that makes it so special. In 1965, the first Shelby GT350s were available in one color combination: Wimbledon White with Guardsman Blue stripes. After Shelby American sold just 562 units for the 1965 model year, Ford “suggested” that Shelby expand the GT350s appeal by smoothing some of its rough edges—specifically, a quieter, full-length exhaust system and softer suspension—and expanding the choice of available colors to include Candy Apple Red, Sapphire Blue, Ivy Green and Raven Black. While not quantifiable, the expanded palette certainly attracted more buyers, resulting in sales of almost 1,400 cars, including four convertibles, and that doesn’t count the 1,000 sold to Hertz Corporation. Like the 1965 original, the Shelby GT350 resurrected in 2011 was available only in Performance White with blue stripes, but in 2012, Shelby nodded to tradition by offering a slate of new colors: Grabber Blue, Red Candy, Race Red, Kona Blue, Black and Ingot Silver. Just as importantly, Ford and Shelby decided to offer a convertible version of the 2012 GT350, the first since 1970, a decision that proved popular with buyers. CSM No. 123500080, this 2012 Ford Shelby GT350 Convertible demonstrates the lasting appeal of the GT350 concept. Visually, unique front and rear fascias instantly establish the car’s special identity, which is furthered by its unique, scooped, fiberglass hood, the classic “Powered by Ford” fender emblems and 19-inch Shelby/Cragar five-spoke aluminum wheels. Its 5.0L V-8 engine was upgraded with a polished Shelby/Whipple supercharger and Borla center-exit exhaust, and backed by a 6-speed manual transmission. The GT350 treatment also incorporates Shelby/Ford Racing suspension and Shelby/Baer disc brakes. This GT350 convertible’s custom-tailored black interior offers special seat upholstery, Auto Meter carbon fiber A-pillar gauges, a short-throw shifter, dual-zone climate control, a Shaker audio system and GT350 cup lid applique.
