When Ford delivered a white K-Code Mustang GT Fastback to Shelby in 1965 to have it turned into an SCCA-type racing car for the streets, Carroll Shelby tuned the 289/271 HP V-8 engine to 306 HP. The chassis received override traction bars, Koni shocks and a thicker front sway way bar. A fiberglass hood with an air intake was installed along with special wheels and tires, and the rear seating area was modified to accommodate a spare tire, turning the Mustang into a two-seater. Blue racing stripes were applied and, for the most part, the GT350 was not only born but became an instant legend, a Mustang that was really able to hold its own around the track but could also be used daily. The evolution continued, and for 1967, with a newly styled body, Shelby Mustangs received additional revisions, turning them very much into their own car. However, the big news was the new GT500. A much more comfortable car, the GT500 offered passengers more creature comforts and a lot more power, thanks to the 428 CI Police Interceptor V-8 engine. While the GT350 was a force to be reckoned with, the GT500 proved an absolutely formidable muscle car with luxury accoutrements to create a lovely, very unique driving experience. It was brutally quick and stunningly fast, but it was also accommodating, serving as the kind of GT that could be used on a date Saturday night and raced on Sunday morning. This is Shelby No. 00748, a 1968 Shelby GT500 Fastback presented in a highly original state and powered by a 428 CI Police Interceptor engine and 4-speed manual transmission. Finished in red with white rocker stripes, it’s fitted with a twin- scoop hood, Shelby Magstar wheels, grille-mounted driving lights, elongated tail lights, upper and lower side scoops and Shelby Cobra emblems. The black interior is fitted with bucket seats, a center console, wood-grain trim, auxiliary gauges and a pushbutton AM radio. Power steering and power brakes with front discs make the GT500 a little easier to drive, even in tight spaces. With the same owner for the past 30 years, the odometer shows 67,869 miles.
