The first Mustang was introduced to the public on April 17, 1964 at the New York World’s Fair, while simultaneously, across the country, dealerships rolled Mustangs onto their showroom floors. The world got Mustang fever; everybody wanted one. Executives at Ford considered the Mustang project to be a simple, money-making machine that would likely be out of production in about 10 years, but they couldn’t have been more incorrect. With Carroll Shelby waving his magic wand over the Mustang, the “secretary’s car” was transformed into a world-class competitor. It was truly the every-person car with something for everyone on any budget. With small 6-cylinder engines and no accessories or options, the Mustang could provide almost anyone a stylish car to get around in. The efficiency minded, the performance minded, and everybody in between flocked to Mustang and Ford could barely keep up with orders. The first Mustang built was a convertible sold to Captain Stanley Tucker, a Canadian airline pilot, just three days before the Mustang’s launch. It was Wimbledon White with a white top and a black interior featuring a center console, automatic transmission and a 260 CI V-8 engine. The first Mustang coupe rolled off the line right behind it, finished in Caspian Blue with a matching interior and powered by an inline 6-cylinder engine. By the colors at least, it made sense when Ford celebrated Mustang’s anniversary in 2015, building just 1,964 specially equipped Mustangs available only in Wimbledon White or Kona Blue. The interiors were comprised of two-tone Cashmere and black leather upholstery with special floor mats and a Cashmere, stitched, leather-wrapped steering wheel. They also featured the Performance Package, including Brembo 6-piston brakes with Pirelli tires. A smattering of other specialized details accessorized the 50th Anniversary Mustang, and this one has only been driven 64 miles. No. 85 of the 1,964 produced, it is complete with the 5.0L V-8 engine and 6-speed manual transmission. It‘s finished in the Wimbledon White and has heated and ventilated front seats, dual-zone climate control, an AM/FM stereo system, power locks, windows, mirrors, brakes and steering, and more, including all the specialized elements marking it as one of the rarest Mustangs ever built.
