With the mid-1968 introduction of the 428 Cobra Jet, Carroll Shelby knew that Ford’s new performance big-block was a perfect fit under the scooped hood of his Mustang Shelby GT500. And when he heard that Chevrolet was planning a new muscle car called “King of the Road,” Shelby instructed his lawyers to quickly swoop in to copyright the name. Thus, the midyear 1968 Shelbys powered by the 428 Cobra Jet carried “GT500KR” in their lower body stripes. One of those late-build Shelbys is this Wimbledon White 1968 GT500KR fastback, Shelby No. 04173, which has been thoroughly restored to its original specifications as built by Shelby Automotive at the A.O. Smith assembly facility in Ionia, Michigan. According to its listing in the official Shelby Registry, the GT500 was shipped to Portland, Oregon, in November 1968 for delivery to Smilie Ford Sales in Redmond, Washington. Although the 428 Cobra Jet was conservatively rated at 335 HP, 25 less than the GT500 Police Interceptor 428 that it replaced, the CJ was a true performance powerhouse with 427 Low-Riser heads, Holley carburetion, a 390GT camshaft and high-flow exhaust manifolds to provide the top-of-the-line Shelby Mustang with plenty of bite to back up its muscular looks. To differentiate the Shelby from the standard Mustang, the 1968 Shelby incorporated the extensive use of fiberglass body panels, including a hood with forward-placed scoops (functional for the Cobra Jet’s Ram- Air), aggressive nose with driving lights, and a rear end with spoiler and sequential tail lights from the 1965 Thunderbird. Inside, the 1968 Shelbys came with a Mustang Deluxe wood- grain interior enhanced by a Shelby-unique roll bar, wood-rim steering wheel and console with padded, Cobra-embossed armrest and dual gauges. One of only 1,053 GT500KR fastbacks produced for 1968, this GT500KR is equipped with an automatic transmission, 3.50:1 Traction-Lok rear axle, a Tilt-Away steering column, power steering and brakes, a fold-down rear seat and Shelby 10-spoke aluminum wheels with the correct Goodyear E70 Speedway tires. Both the instrument panel and hood underside were autographed by Carroll Shelby. The GT500KR comes with a Deluxe Marti Report and original build sheet, also signed by Carroll Shelby.
