As the 1970s drew to a close, Pontiac had firmly established itself as the premier performance division of the era. Rounding out that era for Pontiac was the 1979 Trans Am SE, and this incredibly original example shows a mere 110 miles on the odometer. Even though Pontiac made it look easy, these were actually troubling times for the auto industry and the U.S. as a whole. Engineering a performance car in those years was generally a “style over substance” situation, where bright stripes and decals were placed on a vehicle with little to no additional hardware. Pontiac had the vision to realize that the performance era, like the decade itself, was coming to a close and one last push was needed to supply the needed hardware to their beloved Trans Am. Knowing that production of 400 Pontiac engines was scheduled to cease after 1978, PMD stockpiled a small supply of engines for limited 1979 production. This PWH- coded engine was distinguished by the “T/A 6.6” decals on the shaker hood (automatics received a “6.6 Litre” decal) and based on the earlier and stronger 481988 block casting, it featured a special camshaft and slightly higher 8.1:1 compression for a rating of 220 HP at 4,000 RPM with 320 lb-ft of torque at 2,800 RPM. It also used a Rochester Quadrajet 4-barrel carburetor and dual-outlet exhaust with decorative splitters. The fifth character in the VIN received the engine designation “Z.” As a result of the limited-edition, “last of the line” status, the 400 CI, 4-speed 1979 Trans Am was an instant collectible, and this exquisite example must rank as one of the lowest-mileage and most original of the breed. With a total production of just 1,107 units, this gorgeous one-owner machine has racked up just 110 miles from new. That is not a misprint—just 110 miles, which works out to a scant 2.55 miles per year. Finished in its factory-applied Starlight Black with a Camel Tan interior, this particular Y84 Trans Am SE came with the aforementioned 400 T/A 6.6 V-8 and floor-shifted, close-ratio 4-speed, as well as power steering and power 4-wheel disc brakes, a tilt steering column, AM/FM stereo with dual rear speakers, power windows and door locks, Special Performance Package and a limited-slip differential. This car also has a color-keyed Formula steering wheel and a gold-toned, engine-turned dash panel. Additionally, the Trans Am retains its original, factory-installed 225/70R-15 Uniroyal steel-belted radial tires, Space Saver spare tire and inflation canister, as well as the storage sleeves for the roof hatches. As this car did not go through the complete dealer delivery process, the original factory-applied protective plastic carpet sheeting is still in place and the interior is pristine. Under the hood, the PWH-coded 400 retains its original, factory-applied finishes and decals, and there is very little in the way of deterioration or patina. It is as close to a time-warp machine as is possible. As original as this car is, it’s also extensively documented, with original purchasing documents, a copy of the MSO, window sticker, owner’s manual and sun visor sleeve, as well as a 1979 Pontiac dealer brochure, GM license plate bracket, warranty brochure and Delco radio manual. Even the build sheets are still intact. With its exceptionally low mileage, documentation and one-owner status, this 1979 Trans Am SE would be a fantastic addition to a well-curated museum or private collection.
