Unrestored with only 22,900 miles on the odometer, this 1968 Shelby is one of just 224 GT350s originally ordered by Hertz for rental duty though the Hertz Sports Car Club. Unlike the more well-known 1966 Hertz Shelbys that were mainly black with gold stripes, the 1968 Hertz Shelbys were built in a variety of colors without special identification. After its purchase from Hertz, the original owner kept the GT350 until 2019, driving it sparingly and preserving the originality by storing it in his garage since 1984. A true and well-preserved GT350, this Hertz Shelby, Shelby No. 01219, retains its original Candyapple Red paint and rust-free body with original Shelby fiberglass panels, along with an undercarriage distinguished by the factory-applied red oxide primer, overspray, paint daubs and chalk marks. The drivetrain remains original to the car, including the 302 CI V-8 with stamped Ford VIN, automatic transmission, rear end with axle tag still in place and driveshaft with visible paint identification stripes. Many typical replacement parts are also factory original, including the carburetor, water pump, radiator, fuel pump and master cylinder, all of which have been rebuilt internally. Valve covers, cylinder heads and the air cleaner are also as installed at Ford’s Metuchen Assembly Plant before conversion into a Shelby at the A.O. Smith facility in Michigan. The Saddle interior is still equipped with its original seat upholstery, carpet, headliner, dash pad, radio and seat belts with manufacturer tags. The factory air-conditioning has been refurbished. Other seldom-found original items include the glass, chrome trim, hubcaps, factory blue shocks, rear leaf springs with paint identification marks, and exhaust with original clamps and mounting hardware. The trunk is equipped with the factory mat, jack, lug-nut wrench and Goodyear spare mounted on its steel wheel. This low-mileage, remarkably original 1968 Shelby GT350 Hertz is documented by its Marti Report, build sheet, Shelby paperwork, registrations from 1972 to 1984 and listing in the Shelby Registry.
