One of 954 produced from 1960 through 1963, this 1962 Ferrari 250 GTE Series II, Chassis No. 3739 and Engine No. 3739, was comprehensively restored during 30 years of single ownership that began in 1988. While coachbuilders such as Vignale, Ghia and Touring built 2+2 bodies on Ferrari chassis for individual customers, it was not until June 1960 that the prototype for the first production Ferrari 2+2 made its debut as the marshal’s car for the 24 Hours of Le Mans, its first public showing. The official introduction came at the October 1960 Paris Auto Show. Its wheelbase remained the same as the two-seat 250 GT at 103 inches, but the engine was moved forward to provide more legroom for the 2+2 layout. Wrapped in elegant Pininfarina coachwork, the 250 GTE proved to be a popular choice among owners, including Enzo Ferrari himself, who, according to his son Piero, “loved the 2+2 … this was his personal car. My father was normally driving himself, but he always had a driver with him, and a little dog, so for him a two-seater wasn’t enough.” Delivered new to Luigi Chinetti Motors in New York City, No. 3739 was built to left-hand drive U.S. specifications. Its early ownership is unknown, but it is known to have been in good driver-quality condition when its 30-year owner purchased it in October 1988 with 48,033 miles on the odometer. Two years later, a full nut-and-bolt rotisserie restoration was begun by T’s Sunrise and 3R Automotive in Englewood, Colorado, during which time the original body was replaced with correct Pininfarina Series II Body No. 64, the number stamped on the hood, trunk floor and inner fender walls. The restoration was quite thorough; the entire drivetrain, including the matching- numbers Colombo 3.0L/237 HP V-12 engine, was completely rebuilt and the entire car was refinished to excellent condition. With just 2,500 miles since it was completed in June 1997, the car remains in an especially fresh state, finished with close attention to such important items as correct Securit windows, Marchal headlights, a restored Blaupunkt Frankfurt radio and new 185VR15 Pirelli Cinturato CA67 tires on chromed 15x5.5-inch Borrani wire wheels. Gleaming paint, glass and brightwork, concours-quality engine compartment and undercarriage detailing, and a pristine tan leather interior with correct 250-series instruments complete this stunning vintage 2+2, which is offered with an owner’s manual copy, jack, toolkit, emergency equipment, restoration records and historical documentation that includes Marcel Massini and Ferrari Market Letter history reports.
