Of all the Mustangs that arrived during the muscle car era, the Boss 302 was always considered “the player.” The Boss 429 release was for engine homologation, not class racing, and though Cobra Jets made a big drag strip splash to start off, they were really street sweepers. The Boss 302, on the other hand, was a high-RPM corner carver, and this 1970 example showcases the technology from what many consider to be the pinnacle season of Trans-Am racing. Never a standalone engine package, the Boss 302 name denoted an overall performance vehicle, balanced between racing technology and curbside attraction. The highlight was the Boss 302 CI V-8 engine, underrated at 290 HP in 1970 and featuring large-port heads, revised intake valves for better low-end performance, an oversquare block design and 10.6:1 compression. Here, it wears the optional Shaker hood, cast finned valve covers and premium engine detailing. A true enthusiast driver’s car, this is backed by the close-ratio, 4-speed manual transmission and a 3.91 Traction-Lok differential. All Boss 302s came standard with a tuned, competition-focused, factory suspension to legalize those parts for the SCCA series, including the fast-ratio steering box. This car is finished in bright yellow with a black- center Shaker hood and cowl-to-side race striping. Inside, this Boss 302 has upscale appointments, including black bucket seats and center console, a Hurst T-handle shifter, round-face gauges, an AM radio, the Décor group, wood-grain trim accents, a driver’s remote mirror and a fold-down rear seat. Outside, this car features unmistakable trim, such as the Boss front and rear spoilers, rear window sport slats, body-color outside mirrors and Mustang emblems. The crowning touches are Ford’s Magnum 500 wheels with Goodyear F60-15 Polyglas GT tires, completing the sense of style that was part of the Boss 302 mystique. Alas, things quickly changed as Ford moved away from racing, making the 1970 examples the final factory homologation version released. Well-dressed with excellent premium options and a notorious reputation, owning this car can make its new owner feel like the Boss, too.
