Considered a classic among Mopar small-block aficionados, the 1971 Duster performance package was noted for its stylish shark-tooth grille, fastback body design and twin- scoop hood. Back then, the biggest engine available in the car was the 340 CI V-8, certainly a strong engine package. However, changes to the Duster offered here allow for much more, as this Plymouth Resto Mod now features a 408 CI stroker V-8 engine dressed up in 340 callout trim. The engine is built around a 360 block using an Eagle crank and forged H-beam rods. A Hughes solid-lifter cam is now centered in the block, with Mopar Performance and chrome dress-up parts, an Edelbrock intake, billet metering blocks and an FBO ignition module as part of it all. An aluminum radiator is up front, while a complete TTI header system sends the exhaust note to dual pipes and chrome tips. Behind the powerplant is a rebuilt 4-speed manual transmission coupled via a billet flywheel, Centerforce clutch and new driveshaft to the narrowed 8.75-inch rear end with 3.55:1 gears, Sure Grip and Moser 30-spline axles. The Tor Red exterior makes for an immediate first impression, with Duster 340 graphics, hood blackout graphics, Go Wing rear spoiler, tinted glass and factory body-color outside mirrors. The black interior is also stunning, with bucket seats using Legendary seat covers and new seat foam, a new headliner, Dynamat sound insulation and new carpet. The Hurst Pistol Grip shifter has hand-carved grips, a Tuff steering wheel is on the rare original steering column with key release, new Vintage instruments have been set up in a custom dash panel, and a RetroSound stereo completes it. Underneath it all is a Borgeson power steering gearbox, upgraded master cylinder, Wilwood disc brake kit, fresh suspension components front and rear, a K-frame with strong spool-type engine mounts, and subframe connectors. Bilstein shocks, new leaf springs, traction bars and a sway bar complete the road- handling prowess. Riding on beautiful 15-inch MB Wheels Old School mags and current-era BF Goodrich Radial T/A white-letter tires, this is a well-thought-out package that is sure to bring a smile to the face of both its owner and whoever else sees it.
