When Ford introduced the restyled Mustang for 1967, it was noticeably bigger, bolder and more muscular. The Fastback had a unique straight line from roof to tail, with no discernable trunk lid, per se, giving it a truly aerodynamic, sporting image. Ordering one that Shelby had sprinkled his magic over created a relative race car for the streets, but unlike the earlier GT350s, the new editions were more civilized, they drove easier and rode slightly softer, which enticed a wider market. It was the kind of car you could flog all day at the tracks and use that night for a date. Shelby also introduced the new GT500 in 1967, a sledgehammer of a car with a 428 CI Cobra Jet V-8 engine. Popular in movies and television, it was ultimately the ’67 GT500 that was cast in the remake of “Gone in 60 Seconds” starring Nicolas Cage and Angelina Jolie among a bevy of other A-list actors. Instantly popular, everyone had to have one, and nothing has changed; they are still one of the most sought-after Mustangs ever built, and this one is an event all by itself. This ’67 Mustang Fastback packs a 550 HP 427R Roush V-8 engine (Serial No. 25) and 5-speed Tremec manual transmission, a TCP-built 9-inch rear end, 4-wheel power disc brakes and TCP coilover front and rear suspension, to name but a few modifications. Painted in gray with black stripes, the Mustang is fitted with a Shelby custom hood, Shelby decklid and tail lights, a billet grille, side exhaust covers, wheel flares, bullet-style sideview mirrors, PIAA headlights and fog lights, and Halibrand-style custom wheels with Nitto tires, all bringing together a great look. Inside, the Hollywood touch combines with a Roush custom interior with custom bucket seats, a billet tilt steering column topped by a GT500 wood-grain steering wheel, Auto Meter white-face gauges, an Alpine audio system and air conditioning. And, of course, it’s got a nitrous-oxide system with an armed switch behind the shifter. The battery is mounted in the trunk, and the entire scene is a hugely desirable Mustang that was once part of the Level 5 Motorsports Collection.
