The legendary LS6 454 Chevrolet engine is still best remembered for its appearance in the redesigned 1970 Chevelle SS, as this would be the only year for the high-compression version, but the car being offered here is even more exceptional. This Chevelle SS454 shows 34,000 actual miles, and it was originally built at the Van Nuys, California, GM plant and then sold new to a dentist in Corcoran, California. Like many of its contemporaries, there can be little doubt that street racing and performance was the end game for the first buyer, as extras are minimal. Under the power-bulge hood, this car has retained its matching-numbers 454/450 HP LS6 V-8 engine, which features the dual-snorkel air cleaner with chrome top and displacement decal, 4-barrel carburetor, detailed components, refinished brake booster, era-specific evaporative emissions equipment and dual exhaust. Backing this up is the TH400 automatic transmission and G80 Positraction differential. Ordering this engine also required the Z15 SS 454 car package, which added $503.45 to the base Malibu model price and included things like the special SS454 emblems, blackout grille, rubber rear SS bumper pad, special hood and performance-related suspension enhancements. This car was delivered in factory Code 19 Tuxedo Black with a matched black vinyl top and black interior. Inside, enjoyment came from the AM radio, in-dash tachometer and clock (both part of the extra cost Special Instrument panel) and well-cushioned bench seat upholstery. Of course, heavy-duty suspension and power front disc brakes came standard with every Z15, and power steering was also optioned onto this car as ordered. Five-spoke sport wheels with SS center caps wearing Firestone Wide Oval raised-white-letter tires are also correct OEM equipment to this car. Finally, provenance is abundant on this Chevrolet, including the partial build sheet, window sticker, factory invoice, owner’s manual, original Protect-O-Plate and first owner dealer imprint. Couple this level of documentation with its low mileage and correct driveline, and the sum total yields a unique muscle car well worthy of being treasured over 50 years later.
