Stripes, spoilers, Shaker scoop and slats: this 1970 Boss 302 has all the right S-words, plus Magnum 500 wheels to boot. A one of just four as equipped per the Marti Report, this Grabber Orange Boss represents the peak of Mustang’s short-lived muscle car era, a time when all-out performance trumped fuel economy. Conceived and built to legalize equipment for Trans-Am racing, the 1970 Boss 302 Mustang came with Ford’s heaviest duty components: a mandatory Toploader 4-speed transmission with Hurst T-handle shifter, 9-inch rear axle with nodular iron pumpkin and 31-spline axles, Competition Suspension with staggered rear shocks, power front disc brakes, 15-inch wheels and wide F60x15 Goodyear Polyglas tires. Although engine displacement measured the familiar 302 CI, the Boss 302 powerplant was much different from Ford’s less-potent passenger-car 302. By borrowing the canted-valve, large-port heads from the 351 Cleveland, the Boss 302 gained high-revving capabilities, producing 290 HP at 5,800 RPM with help from a high-performance solid-lifter camshaft, dual-point distributor, aluminum intake, Holley 780 CFM carburetor and free-flowing exhaust manifolds. For 1970, Ford built 7,014 Boss 302 Mustangs, just enough to satisfy the SCCA’s homologation rule and setting the stage for a Bud Moore/Parnelli Jones juggernaut that captured the 1970 Trans-Am championship. With its Grabber Orange paint similar to the eye-popping Schoolbus Yellow on the Trans-Am race cars, this Boss 302 has the standard hockey-stick stripes and front spoiler along with optional rear spoiler, rear window slats and a functional Shaker hood scoop. Other options include power steering, a Traction-Lok axle, the black Décor Group interior with wood-grain trim and Philco AM radio, a center console and an electric clock. The Boss is nicely detailed with its factory equipment, including the rev limiter, aluminum valve covers, white-letter Goodyear tires and Hurst T-handle with the correct Allen set screw. With low production, championship racing heritage, iconic muscle car looks, superb handling and a high-performance engine, the Boss 302 Mustang ranks among the most desirable of Mustang collector cars.
