For 1970, Chevrolet would fully engage in the muscle car wars by enlisting a new 454 CI V-8 engine. In the LS5 SS454 guise, the muscular Chevelle appealed to a larger group of people as it commanded less money and was slightly more docile with 360 HP and a whopping 500 lb-ft of torque. The LS5 package came with a number of additional standard features to ensure everyone knew it was an SS454, but for those who wanted more NASCAR for the street, there was the LS6 SS454. Touting 450 HP and 500 lb-ft of torque, the LS6 added more to the LS5 package, most notably a 454 that was vastly reengineered for performance. Magazines of the day found 0-60 MPH times in the 6-second range and quarter-mile runs were completed in just over 13 seconds. Chassis modifications and the healthy weight, wheelbase and width gave the Chevelle a nicely planted feel, which inspired confidence in most anyone behind the wheel. Expensive, the LS6 SS454 Chevelle would command around $5,000, making it one of the more expensive muscle cars of the day. Largely because of the hefty cost, very few were built; in fact, it’s agreed that only about 4,475 LS6-equipped Chevelles and El Caminos were built in 1970, and there is no detailed breakdown as to how many were coupes, convertibles or El Caminos. Regardless, an LS6-equipped Chevrolet is a hugely desirable vehicle, and this one has been through a professional, body- off, nut-and-bolt, rotisserie restoration. Bearing a matching- numbers 454/450 HP V-8 engine with the Winters aluminum intake manifold and 4-barrel carburetor, it’s equipped with an automatic transmission, 12-bolt rear end, power steering and power brakes with front discs. A rare stripe-delete car, it’s finished in Shadow Gray with a black vinyl top and has rechromed bumpers, a chrome driver’s side mirror and 5-spoke SS wheels with Firestone Wide Oval white-letter tires. The black interior features bucket seats, a tachometer, pushbutton AM/FM radio and a column shift.
