The wild Superbird was really the one sure way Plymouth could get its star driver, Richard Petty, back into a Mopar. Quickly designed, these unique Road Runners would be the final race homologation aero-specials from any manufacturer, and the company was required to build almost 2,000 of them before the start of 1970. This example, unrestored in highly original condition (including paint, sheet metal, drivetrain and interior) is showing just 24,510 miles. It is also one of an estimated 56 Superbirds produced in Code 999 Corporate/Petty Blue, which was offered on this model as a special color code exactly like Petty Enterprises used on the racing circuit. One of 408 automatic V-code Superbirds produced, this 440 6-BBL car is documented with three broadcast sheets, the Chrysler MSO, dealership transfer tags, original bill of sale and a window sticker, and it was previously part of the Wellborn Musclecar Museum. The right-hand sun visor has even been autographed by Richard Petty himself. Sold new at Rutherford Chrysler-Plymouth in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, underneath the special hood is a matching-numbers V-code 440 6-BBL V-8 engine rated at 390 HP and featuring a trio of 2-barrel carburetors. It is backed by the A36 Performance Axle Package, meaning the A727 TorqueFlite automatic transmission and 3.55 Sure Grip 8.75-inch differential. Power steering and power brakes with front discs are also here. What makes this car even more unique is its tri-color scheme of Petty Blue with a black top and an upscale white interior. Indeed, that interior includes buckets seats, the factory C16 center console with shifter, wood-grain trim, an instrument panel with 150 MPH speedometer and clock, pedal dress- ups and the incredibly rare two-spoke S83 rim-blow steering wheel. The outside features all the cool Superbird trim: a nose cone, fender scoops, A-pillar chrome, a flush rear window, rear spoiler, large Plymouth quarter-panel decals and assorted Road Runner cartoon graphics. Equipped with 15-inch Rally wheels and Goodyear F60-15 Polyglas GT tires, this very unique, very original car looks the part of what was needed to get The King racing again. It is a purebred that will get the hearts of true Mopar aficionados racing as well.
