Chevrolet’s Corvette had benefited from annual improvements, and for 1978, the improvements were fairly extensive. Most noticeably, the Corvette received a slick, fastback rear window, which aided visibility, increased cargo capacity, improved aerodynamics and arguably gave the Corvette a cleaner, sleeker look. Performance was also enhanced, and for 1979 the 350 CI V-8 engine received refinements that resulted in more linear power delivery and smoother overall performance. Two 350 CI V-8 engines were available again, the 185 HP (175 in California) L48 and the 220 HP L82. The new Corvette also received a heavier dose of sound-deadening material and a flat-folding passenger seat for easier access to the rear cargo area, and cloth seat inserts became available. Admittedly, cars from the late 1970s through the mid-1980s suffered power deficiencies, but Corvette always delivered an exceptional effort. While this generation of Corvette may not have been the quickest or fastest, the improvements to the chassis, weight distribution, passenger comfort, interior cargo volume, luxury amenities and power delivery made them some of the most comfortable, best-driving Corvettes of the third-generation production run. This 1979 Chevrolet Corvette has only traveled 24,225 miles from new. It’s finished in Corvette Red, and the window sticker is still affixed to the windshield, reflecting the degree of newness this car enjoys. Fitted with a small ocean of features, the bright red interior is upholstered in leather and hosts amenities like cruise control, a tilt-telescope steering wheel, power windows, power locks, air conditioning, an AM/FM/8-track stereo with dual rear speakers and a power antenna, an electric rear window defogger and T-tops. Outside, the Corvette shines with unique elements such as remote-controlled twin sport mirrors, front and rear spoilers, and polished aluminum wheels with Michelin tires. The driving experience is enhanced with equipment such as power 4-wheel disc brakes, power steering, 4-wheel independent suspension and a 350 CI V-8 engine with a 4-barrel carburetor, automatic transmission and a limited-slip differential. Red on red, full of features and with low mileage, this is a difficult 1979 Corvette to repeat.
