It’s been argued that the Oldsmobile 88 was the first muscle car ever built. Introduced in 1949 and packing the Rocket V-8 engine used in the larger, heavier Oldsmobiles, the 88 could scoot along with surprising aplomb and, as such, it made a nice reputation for itself in racing circles. For 1955, Oldsmobile, like other GM divisions, introduced entirely new body styles, bringing customers wholly modern design philosophies. In keeping with the times, Oldsmobile adopted a decidedly futuristic styling formula with details nodding to the Space Race. It was known sometimes as the Futurist Division, quietly taking a number of daring, almost experimental stances with engineering and design. For 1957, the 88 emerged with smooth styling that lent itself to an almost European influence, a surprisingly unique instrument cluster and, when opted, the 317 CI Rocket V-8 engine with J2 Tri-Power, three 2-barrel carburetors that helped the large engine create a fabulous 277 HP. As the convertible, it was one of Oldsmobile’s most prominent vehicles, offering style, comfort and exceptional performance all in one, and it was squarely aimed at a market of well-to-do customers who appreciated a little spice in their life. Only 7,128 88 Convertibles were built in 1957, even fewer of which featured the Batwing-topped J2 Tri-Power like this one. Presented in Alcan White with red accents, the interior sustains the color motif, reversing the dominant colors with red leather upholstery trimmed with white detailing.
