The introduction of the fifth-generation Corvette in 1997 marked the first all-new model since late 1983. A comprehensive refinement, the new Corvette featured a new chassis and a milestone redesign of Chevrolet’s famed small-block V-8 engine. Another breakthrough was reached with new rear transaxles, four speeds in the electronically managed automatic and six speeds in the manual gearbox, an ideal 50/50 weight distribution and consequently excellent handling with the new Corvette. Celebrating the new Corvette’s arrival, it was selected as the official pace car for the 1998 Indianapolis 500, with 1,163 commemorative models offered to the public, each carrying a $5,039 premium over the Corvette’s basic MSRP for the automatic and $5,804 for the 6-speed. All Pace Car editions were finished in purple with black and yellow leather interiors, black convertible tops, yellow wheels and special accent items. The full load of factory amenities was standard, with only a front license-plate frame, 12-disc CD changer, body-side moldings and magnesium wheels optional. Offered with just 4,247 miles, this 1998 Chevrolet Corvette Indianapolis Pace Car Edition is one of just 547 produced with the 6-speed manual transmission. Owned since new by Al Berman, it participated in the 5th Anniversary Corvette Caravan in 1999. In addition to its potent LS1 V-8 and 6-speed powertrain, the Corvette includes all the Pace Car Edition accoutrements, including the Indianapolis 500 graphics, sport seats, dual-zone air conditioning, the Delco-Bose AM/FM/CD stereo, Active Handling system, fog lamps and power windows, locks and mirrors, plus a Corsa track exhaust system with the original exhaust system included. Yellow Pace Car Edition wheels are contrasted by black brake calipers and mount Goodyear Eagle F1 tires. A set of never-used “82nd Indianapolis 500, May 24, 1998” floor mats is included, along with service records since new and a shop manual. The new fifth-generation model’s arrival was a landmark event in Corvette history, and this 1998 Indianapolis Pace Car Edition continues to celebrate this special status, along with Autoweek magazine’s selection of the Corvette as its North American Car of the Year for 1998.
