but has also been turned into a Hi-Winders museum housing more than 50 years of club memorabilia. Each of these artifacts of car club history can be viewed by the public during open events. With this year’s open house scheduled for September 20, members and the public can enjoy the clubhouse’s offerings with the knowledge that partial proceeds will benefit local Veterans of Foreign War (VFW). When the Hi-Winders aren’t hosting their own affairs, members can be found co-hosting vehicular events for multiple organizations. Other events the group co-hosts include the Don Schumacher Racing open house, which contributes donations to Riley Children’s Hospital, and the Danville, Indiana, Cruise-In on the Square. The latter is a once-a-month event that takes place over the course of six months: May through October. Beginning May 1, 2020, from 5 to 9 p.m., the Hi-Winders can be found alongside the 150 vehicles lining the Indy-based square. Overall, the club consists of “car nuts” such as President Thomas Noe, Vice President Joe Snyder and original members Stan Eppen, Jon Manker, John Bacher, Larry Bilbee and Terry Engle. Each member has his own unique story—from U.S. Army and Navy veterans to family men and newbies in the Indianapolis area, the members come from all walks of life—but with each difference comes the commonality of an unbreakable admiration for the vehicular sect. The members of the Indy Hi-Winders Car Club hope to keep this hobby and the interest alive for as long as possible, and they are always looking to accumulate more members, especially younger participants with a knack or a love for car shows, drag racing and every type of automobile. To join, willing participants must simply be automotive-oriented. New members are expected to attend 10 consecutive club meetings, which happen weekly, and, if they show the right enthusiasm and character, the new member is inducted into the club. Putting forth charitable efforts while maintaining an inclusive group for car-lovers and an open window to the car show world, the Indy Hi-Winders Car Club is always open to new additions. With 58 years under the club’s belt, the members hope that their organization continues to flourish. In the words of club president Thomas Noe, “having a club is like having another family,” and a bond that strong is something anyone would be lucky to be a part of.
