Recalling the purposeful styling of the elemental and avant- garde 356 Speedster of the 1950s, Porsche president Peter Schutz conceived a modern variation in 1986 based on the 911 Cabriolet. Helmuth Bott, Porsche’s technical director, refined the concept, adding a hard removable rear tonneau evoking the profile of the original 356 Speedster. Bott’s Speedster concept was refined even further and approved for production as Option M503 on the outgoing 3.2L 911 Carrera for 1989. As produced, the new Speedster featured a cut-down windscreen, wind-up side windows, deleted vent windows, a low-profile manual top and deleted rear seats accommodating the “double-hump” fiberglass top cover. Just 2,065 Speedsters were produced from August 1988 to July 1989, including 823 for the United States. The majority—1,894—were “Turbo Look” cars, based on the 930 Turbo body shell, including heavy-duty 4-piston disc brakes with cross-drilled rotors and 7-inch front and 9-inch rear wheels. Only “Turbo Look” Speedsters were sold to Germany and America. Pricing of the “Turbo Look” option was $13,045 alone, factored into the Speedster’s $65,480 base price. Sold from January through September 1989, the 911 Speedster was an immediate darling of speculators, some changing hands for considerable premiums. Additionally, the Speedster is historic as the final model produced at Porsche’s old Stuttgart factory. Performance was strong, with the Porsche clocking 0-60 MPH acceleration times of 6.0 seconds, quarter-mile times of 14.5 seconds and a 149 MPH top speed, and all with the responsive handling all 911s are renowned for delivering. Already visually striking, this “Turbo Look” 1989 Porsche 911 Speedster is even more so with its Linen Gray paint finish over Gray leather upholstery. One of just 823 imported to the U.S., it is a compelling find with just 3,000 miles since new. Powered by a 3.2L air-cooled flat 6-cylinder engine delivering a factory-rated 217 HP with Bosch Motronic fuel injection, this Speedster features a 5-speed manual transmission, front and rear independent suspension with torsion bars, 4-wheel disc brakes with vented rotors, a limited-slip differential and short-throw gear shift lever. Sport seats, air conditioning and black Fuchs alloy wheels finish this rare Speedster off.
