The AM General company was formed through multiple corporations tracing back to the Standard Wheel Company of Terre Haute, Indiana. Expanding in 1903 to include the Overland Automotive Division, the division was sold to John North Willys in 1908 to create Willys-Overland Motors. In the 1940s, the Willys-Overland Company grew to fame through its work building General Purpose Vehicles, or GPs, colloquially known as Jeeps, for World War II. Kaiser Motors acquired Willys-Overland in 1953, changing its name to Kaiser-Willys and then to the Kaiser-Jeep Corporation in 1963. In 1970, American Motors Corporation (AMC) bought the company and created the General Products Division of Jeep to produce military vehicles, calling it the AM General Corporation. Through the ensuing years, other companies bought interest, including Renault, LTV and KPS. During the 1990s, AM General began building High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicles (HMMWV, or Humvee) for the military. Gaining tremendous popularity through various missions, civilians began showing interest in having their own Humvees, thus beginning the development of the Hummer, a more civilized Humvee. Despite its civilian nature, the Hummer was largely as robust as its military counterpart, able to traverse terrains impossible to consider in most other off-road vehicles. In order to entertain a larger market, Hummer began producing a more affordable SUV called the H2 and a pickup called H3. This followed that the original would be called H1. This 1998 H1 is of the four-door wagon body style and is powered by a 6.5L turbocharged V-8 diesel engine joined with a 4-speed automatic transmission. Finished in red, the body is equipped with a brush guard, winch, tow hooks and twin sideview mirrors. The 16-inch wheels are fitted with Goodyear Wrangler tires and the onboard Central Tire Inflation System (CTIS) allowing for on-the-fly tire pressure reduction or inflation. The gray interior provides air conditioning, a CB radio, a PA system, a Kenwood CD stereo system with JL Audio subwoofers, cruise control, power windows and more. To be sold with the manufacturer literature, this H1’s odometer reads less than 18,000 miles and comes with a clean CarFax.
