Taking a trip back in time isn’t all that farfetched, especially with cars like this 1971 Ford Mustang Boss 351 that is one of just 1,806 Boss 351s built. This Boss 351 was bought new by Mike Smith, who kept the car through 2006. Presented today, the Boss is unrestored with an odometer reading just under 12,000 miles with documentation. Finished in Performance White with the Boss 351 graphics, the car touts its original Mach 1 Sports Interior package with black, Clarion-knit bucket seats, the original exhaust, the original shock absorbers, the original Autolite 4300-D carburetor, the original dual-point distributor and the original fuel pump, water pump and starter. It even rolls on original, chrome, 1971 Magnum 500 wheels complete with original Goodyear Polyglas GT tires. The original spare tire, jack and inflation bottle remain in the trunk. Powered by a correct 351/330 HP Cleveland V-8 engine and a wide-ratio 4-speed manual transmission, the engine block was replaced in December 1971 at the Ford dealership where Smith worked. Equipped with factory forged rods, aluminum pistons, solid- lifter cam, hardened and ground pushrods, special valve springs and keepers, and 4-bolt main caps, the Boss 351 was further built with a 2.19-inch canted intake and 1.71-inch canted exhaust valves, delivered a whopping 11.7:1 factory compression ratio. A 3.91 ratio Traction-Lok rear end sends the power to the tires and is low enough to provide the Boss with a remarkable launch. While the Boss package was heavily versed in performance, the interior was known as being a comfortable environment, especially in 1971. This Boss 351 features an AM radio, an electric clock, the Instrumentation Group, a rear ashtray, a Deluxe two-spoke steering wheel, high-back bucket seats, wood applique appointments, a Hurst T-handle shifter, molded door panels and bright pedal trim. Fitted with the Ram Air hood, front spoiler, twin sideview sport mirrors, dual exhaust and power brakes with front discs, the originality of this Boss 351 is rounded out by various documents including the original build sheet, the original sales invoice, documentation from the original owner including pictures, raceway time slips and a notarized letter about the car, the original and an additional copy of the Pennsylvania Titles in the original owner’s name, a Ford technical service bulletin from March 1971, a 1971 Mustang book and promotional material, and documents from Autolite and BF Goodrich. Taking a trip back in time seems easy with this 1971 Ford Mustang Boss 351.
