Throughout the 1990s, 5.0L Mustangs were the weapons of choice for stoplight-to-stoplight street warriors and quarter-mile drag racers. Lightweight and easily modified, their popularity spawned an entire industry of aftermarket parts, race series and even magazines. This 33,000-mile 1993 LX 5.0 hatchback represents those wild and wooly 5.0 Mustangs that ruled America’s roads and boulevards. Built and sold new during the final year of the Fox Body Mustang, the Vibrant Red, sunroof-equipped hatchback has been seriously upgraded with a fuel-injected 347 CI stroker V-8 that is boosted by a Vortech V1 supercharger. After some performance modifications were made to this Mustang, including TrickFlow aluminum cylinder heads, a Ford Motorsports GT40 intake, a BBK throttle body and MSD ignition, it was taken to Al Moody Racing in Mableton, Georgia, for some serious enhancements. After a few runs on the drag strip, the car performed much better, with the first pass after its completed modifications at Silver Dollar drag strip in Reynolds, Georgia, resulting in a 10-second, 122 MPH quarter mile. Many of the era’s big-name aftermarket players add power and durability here, including a T-Rex fuel pump and a Moroso 7-quart oil pan. The recognizable names continue for the drivetrain’s Tremec TKO 5-speed transmission, Lakewood 15202 safety bellhousing, Pro 5.0 short-throw shifter and more durable MotorSport clutch quadrant. A Traction-Lok 8.8-inch rear axle sends the power to rear Mickey Thompson ET street slicks on chrome, aftermarket, five-spoke wheels. For stopping at the end of the quarter-mile, the brakes have been enhanced by power front and rear Cobra discs. Additional equipment includes a Cervini’s cowl-induction fiberglass hood, chrome Hooker 4-point roll bar, dash-mounted MotorSport tachometer with shift light, an A-pillar gauge pod and an Alpine alarm system with keyless entry. Even with its 10-second ET capabilities, the 5.0 hatchback was factory equipped with amenities like air conditioning, power rack- and-pinion steering, remote mirrors and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. Maintained in low-mileage condition in a climate-control building, this modified 1993 hatchback is ready to relive the glory days of the 5.0 Mustangs.
