In the spring of 1992, Ford produced a limited-production run of Summer Edition 1992 Mustang LX 5.0L convertibles. Also known as Feature Cars, these Fox Body convertibles stood out with monochromatic Vibrant Red paint, a white interior, white top and white wheels. With only 2,193 built and sold during the limited production period, this example offered from the Kenny and Marilyn Newcombe collection is an extra-rare piece of Fox Body Mustang history with just 17,570 miles showing on the odometer. The 1992 Summer Edition convertibles were the first of three unique Feature Cars offered by Ford; the 1992 Summer Editions were followed in 1993 by monochromatic white and yellow convertibles, also with white interiors. For 1992, all Summer Editions were Vibrant Red, which was used only on the special springtime convertibles and was not available for other 1992 Mustangs. The Summer Editions utilized body-color paint for the side mirrors, door and window trim, windshield header and side moldings. Another unique item was the rear spoiler, which replaced the Mustang LX convertible’s standard decklid luggage rack. Going to extraordinary measures to make the wheels stand out, Ford contracted the Superior Wheel Company to supply 16-inch, five-spoke wheels with baked-on Opal Pearlescent paint over silver. No. 1,802 of the 2,193 built, this Summer Edition Convertible was built on June 16, 1992 and sent to Chuck Clancy Ford in Atlanta, Georgia. The Newcombes purchased the car on February 11, 1995 with 12,129 miles from Lewis Welch Oldsmobile in Morrow, Georgia, after passing by the lot on their way to World of Wheels in Atlanta, where they were attending a Mustang show. The car was shown in many local and Mustang Club of America shows. Powered by the 5.0L/225 HP V-8 with 4-speed AOD automatic transmission, this Summer Edition convertible is a fantastic example of those Feature Cars offered by Ford in the spring of 1992. Notably, 1992 was the first year for the Mustang convertible’s inner top liner. The low-mileage Mustang is also equipped with a Traction-Lok differential, air conditioning, power rack-and-pinion steering and articulated sports seats with power lumbar support. Kept in climate-controlled storage, the car comes with a window sticker and two sets of keys.
