Shelby No. 01293, this immaculate 1968 Shelby GT500 Fastback was built on January 16, 1968 at the Metuchen, New Jersey, assembly plant and shipped new to Larsen Ford in White Plains, New York, on February 13 that same year. As described in its entry in the Shelby Registry, after a few mechanical issues were corrected under warranty as a new unit, the car was stolen from the dealership before it could be sold. It was recovered several miles away and then sold at auction later in 1968 to Joseph Mazza of West Haverstraw, New York, who owned it until July 1986. It was then purchased in a partly disassembled state by Bruce R. Shlaved of Stoney Point, New York, apparently in anticipation of restoring the car. The restoration, however, would have to wait until 1995, when Mr. Shlaved sold the Shelby to its next owner, Thomas J. Cappadona of Garnerville, New York, who reportedly completed a full two-year rotisserie restoration. Now showing an odometer reading of 2,275 miles, this Shelby GT500 presents in wonderful condition throughout the exterior, interior, engine compartment and undercarriage, the latter retaining the original exhaust system. Sharply finished in its correct Wimbledon White with blue rocker stripes and riding on period-correct Goodyear Polyglas tires on Shelby 10-spoke aluminum wheels, it is powered by the Shelby-spec 428-4V Police Interceptor V-8 engine sporting a finned aluminum Cobra oval air cleaner bearing the late Carroll Shelby’s autograph and backed by a 4-speed manual transmission. In addition to optional power steering and power brakes with front discs, this 1968 GT500 features the black Deluxe Mustang interior with wood-grain accents, knitted vinyl high-back bucket seats, a center console with embossed Cobra emblem and Stewart Warner oil pressure and amp gauges, unique Shelby blue-striped shift knob, tilt-away steering column, air conditioning, shoulder harnesses, fold-down rear seat and an AM radio. One of 1,020 built, it is well documented with the original tags and window sticker, a Shelby order form and Shelby invoice, and it comes with a framed Deluxe Marti report and Shelby build sheet.
