While somewhat controversial when new and discontinued after 1963, it can be argued that the 1963 Chevrolet Corvette Sting Ray Split Window Coupe’s bold, one-year-only rear window design has made it one of the most collectible of all second-generation 1963-67 Corvettes today. Indeed, it is certainly one of the most important automotive designs of the 20th century and a true American cultural icon. Documented as having been produced on July 26, 1963, and delivered new by Bud Gates Chevrolet in South Bend, Indiana, this extremely rare 1963 Chevrolet Corvette Split Window Coupe comes from its owner of the past 25 years. It retains its matching-numbers 327/300 HP V-8 engine, Muncie M20 4-speed manual transmission, and RPO G91 3.08:1 Special Highway Axle (one of just 211 produced) with Positraction limited-slip. Other features and options include tinted glass, an AM/FM radio and full-size wheel covers. In June 2025, the Corvette was repainted by Joe Scafidi’s Bowtie Shop in Billerica, Massachusetts, in its original and rare Code 941 Sebring Silver paint color (1 of 3,516) with a red interior, returning it to one of the most striking color combinations produced in 1963, as denoted on the Corvette’s factory-original body/trim tag. Of importance to savvy Corvette collectors, the Code 941 Sebring Silver paint finish was classified as an Extra-Cost Premium color in Chevrolet sales literature for 1963. A newer exhaust, chrome and upgraded white stripe radial tires round out the car’s recent refurbishment. This splendid split window coupe’s documentation includes affirmation of the body and trim tag by Corvette expert Al Grenning’s CCAS (Collector Car Affirmation Service), the official NCRS/GM Shipping Data Report and the dealer invoice indicating its original delivery by Bud Gates Chevrolet. Collectors will note that it retains most all factory-correct type components, including the spare, jack, jack tools, seat belts, washer system, shifter, shielding, air cleaner, spark plug shields, hoses, hose clamps, No. 3721 carburetor, expansion tank, radiator, gas door assembly, “bowtie” mirror, glovebox door and “cookie tin” hood grates. Featuring a rare and extremely desirable color combination, in addition to its one-year-only split rear window design, this 1963 Chevrolet Corvette Split Window Coupe celebrates the historic, first model year for the second-generation Corvette in very fine style.
