The R230 generation of the Mercedes-Benz SL-Class was introduced for the 2002 model year as a replacement for the famed R129 generation. It continued the model name’s grand touring sports car legacy until 2011, when it too was replaced by the R231. In 2006, the R230 SL underwent a facelift that added new engine choices, a new 7-speed 7G-Tronic automatic with a sport option, steering wheel shift paddles and improved ABS. Looks-wise, a front bumper restyled with three air intakes was introduced, as well as fog lights with chrome surrounds, new light-alloy wheels and redesigned tail lights. Interior changes included softer leather upholstery, new colors, metal door sills with Mercedes-Benz lettering, a removable luggage cover and an optional remote trunk release. 2006 also saw the introduction of the top-of-the-line SL65 AMG model, the most powerful version of the R230. Thanks to the utterly show-stopping twin-turbocharged 6.0L V-12 engine under the hood, the SL65 AMG was capable of 604 HP, 738 lb-ft of torque, and a 0-60 MPH time of anywhere from 3.6 seconds to 4.2 seconds. Other special touches that worked in tandem with the V-12 included AMG sport suspension, an AMG sport exhaust system with four outlets, and an AMG high-performance ABS braking system to bring things to a stop. This particular 2006 Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG sports a power retractable panoramic hardtop with a sunshade, allowing for even greater top speeds on the open road. It is one of only 390 examples produced for 2006, and is finished in a sleek black paint job with an exclusive Nappa leather interior done in charcoal. Notable interior features include an electric tilt and telescopic steering column with three-position memory, the aforementioned AMG SpeedShift paddles behind the leather steering wheel, 12-way power heated and ventilated AMG leather sport seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, a Bose AudioPilot sound system, navigation, SmartKey infrared remote roof automation, Keyless Go vehicle entry and starting system, and a roll bar for added safety. The exterior still boasts its original AMG aerodynamic bodywork, as well as the original 19-inch AMG two-piece wheels with anthracite spokes that recently underwent a restoration. Overall, this is a stunning example of jaw-dropping beauty combined with exhilarating power. With just 14,907 miles on the odometer and offered with a fitted California car cover, two key fobs, owner’s manual, original window sticker, service records and a clean CarFax, this Mercedes-Benz is revved and ready for its next limitless ride.
