Created and purpose-built to homologate Ford’s hot new Boss 429 engine for NASCAR competition, the “Boss Nine” Mustang was essentially hand-built by Ford racing subcontractor Kar Kraft of Brighton, Michigan. Extensive modifications to the Mustang’s basic structure were required to accommodate the big Boss, including the cutting and relocation of the front shock towers. A complete package, the Boss 429 included a Toploader close-ratio 4-speed transmission, 9-inch Traction-Lok rear end, 3.91:1 gears, an engine-oil cooler, a trunk-mounted battery, Competition Suspension with front and rear anti-roll bars and staggered rear shocks, power front disc brakes, chrome Magnum 500 wheels and fat F60x15 belted raised white-letter tires. Laughably, Ford rated the “street” Boss 429 at 375 HP. The Boss 429 Mustang was priced from $4,087 and the priciest non-Shelby Mustang to date. Limited production included 859 (including two Boss-Cougars) for 1969. Just 499 followed for 1970 (including two “Quarter Horse” Boss/Shelby hybrid prototypes) prior to the cancelation of Ford’s Total Performance corporate racing program. Just five exterior colors were available: Calypso Coral, Grabber Orange, Grabber Green, Grabber Blue and Pastel Blue. Once released in sufficient numbers, the Boss 429 engine kept Ford’s racing entries competitive with archrival Chrysler’s Hemi-powered cars everywhere, including NASCAR superspeedways, drag strips and the street. Bearing KK (Kar Kraft) No. 2062 and one of 499 Boss 429 Mustangs produced for 1970, this example is the product of an extensive, photo-documented restoration. Powered of course by the Boss 429 CI V-8 engine with a 4-speed close ratio manual transmission and 3.91 locking rear axle, its many highlights include power steering, Competition Suspension and the Drag Pack. Other highlights include both the Convenience and Décor groups, power front disc brakes, an AM radio, Hi-Back bucket seats with a console, Deluxe seat belts, a tachometer, front spoiler, a rim-blow deluxe steering wheel and Magnum 500 wheels mounting Goodyear Polyglas GT tires. Documents include a Deluxe Marti Report, an original invoice and a build sheet.
