Chevrolet released its potent new RPO LT1 350 CI small- block V-8 for 1970, factory rated at 370 HP in the Corvette. Based on a tough cylinder block with 4-bolt mains and forged internals, the LT1 was built to perform at higher RPMs with a hot solid-lifter valvetrain and breathed deeply with free- flowing cylinder heads and low-restriction intake and exhaust systems. Affectionately called “… the mouse that roared” by Corvette Chief Engineer Zora Arkus-Duntov, the LT1 delivered ferocious performance with the Corvette’s great handling and road holding remaining intact. While lowered compression ratios brought gross power ratings down to 330 HP by 1971 and 255 HP for 1972, Corvette performance remained essentially intact—even with the switch to stricter SAE Net power ratings for 1972. Just 1,741 of 27,004 Corvettes left the factory with the $483.45 RPO LT1 option for 1972, the last year of availability before the famed option code’s return with the fourth-generation Corvette 20 years later. A four-owner car with 24,539 actual miles, this LT1-powered 1972 Corvette features one high-quality repaint in its original Targa Blue, complemented by the original interior and soft top. It retains the original, matching-numbers RPO LT1 350/255 HP engine, 4-speed transmission and 3.70 Positraction rear end. An accompanying CCAS/Grenning engine stamp affirmation letter confirms the engine’s status. The Corvette also retains its factory-original body/trim tag. Features and options include power steering and windows, heavy-duty springs, SS brakes and factory A.I.R. emissions equipment, plus an AM/FM stereo radio, aluminized exhaust, tinted glass and Rally wheels mounting F70x15 raised white- letter tires. Most all factory-correct-type components are present including the spare, jack, jack tools, seat belts, washer system, smog system, shifter, shielding, air cleaner, alternator, distributor, spark plug shields, hoses, hose clamps, window glass, valve covers, carburetor, radiator, gas door assembly and T-3 headlights. Awards and accolades include Bloomington Gold Certification and the NCRS Top Flight award at 98.9%, with both honors accorded in 2021. Outstanding documents include the above- mentioned CCAS/Grenning engine stamp affirmation, a warranty folder with the Protect-O-Plate, the dealer invoice, a Tank Sticker (GM Order Copy), a Corvette owner card bearing the original owner’s name, owner history, copies of old titles, the owner’s manual packet, maintenance receipts, the Bloomington Gold certificate and judging sheets, the NCRS certificate and judging sheets, and a three-ring document binder.
