In 1964, Ford introduced the Mustang, which would become its best-selling model with over a million orders in just the first year and a half. The following year, Carroll Shelby and his crew reworked the Mustang into a full-blooded racing machine. The on-track success of these Shelby GT350s led to the production of GT350s for the road, which were offered in various configurations until 1969. In 1967, Shelby took the Mustang GT350 concept a step further when it began installing a 428 CI Police Interceptor V-8 engine into the newer body-style Mustang. Other performance improvements included replacing the Mustang’s front end, hood, decklid, rear tail light assembly, quarter panel extensions and side scoops with fiberglass replacements. Dubbed the GT500, in all, 2,048 examples of this high-powered Shelby Mustang were produced in 1967, with production ending in 1969. Then, in 2011 at the Los Angeles Auto Show, Ford and Shelby American unveiled a new, second-generation Shelby GT500 that was touted as the most powerful Mustang to date. At its heart was a 5.4L, DOHC, 4-valve, supercharged and intercooled V-8 engine that produced 662 HP and 631 lb-ft of torque at 4,000 RPM. No. 2,217 of the 3,929 GT500 coupes produced for 2012 and known as the “Georgia Red Snake,” this 2012 Ford Shelby GT500 ran 180.5 MPH at the Mojave Magnum Mile. No. 212 of 382 finished in Ingot Silver Metallic and just one of 132 of those to come with Race Red and black accent stripes, this potent Mustang features the SVT Performance package, AFCO racing heat exchanger, 65mm Ford Racing throttle body and a JLT 123mm intake. Its 5.4L V-8 is topped with a 2013 TVS silver powder-coated supercharger and backed by a 6-speed manual transmission with an MGW GT500 shifter, as well as 3.73 gearing in the rear end. Purchased from Teant Ford of Georgia on October 5, 2011, this Shelby is one of 98 to feature the optional Recaro seats with red accents inside its black interior, and other highlights include a roll cage with red harnesses, a Gurney rear spoiler, custom under-hood mural and Shelby 40 chrome 20-inch wheels. Carrying on the Shelby legacy, this GT500 is offered with a Shelby letter of authenticity and its SVT build certificate.
