For 1994, Ford introduced a highly restyled and reengineered Mustang. Known to Ford as the SN95 Mustang, its design was much more fluid, lending the illusion of an all-new car, though in reality a number of chassis and other components had carried over. One of the biggest carryovers was the tried-and-true 5.0L CI V-8 engine, which would ultimately be replaced for the 1996 model year by the modular 4.6L 281 CI V-8. In the SN95’s first year of production, it was selected to pace the Indianapolis 500, an honor Mustang served only twice prior in 1964 and 1979. The 1994 pace car was based on the new SVT Cobra and featured a modified 5.0L/240 HP V-8 engine, a 5-speed manual transmission, power disc brakes, power rack-and-pinion steering, specialized wheels and a MacPherson strut-type front suspension. Finished in Rio Red with a tan leather interior and matching top, the Cobra Pace Cars benefited from a bevy of unique components that gave them an edge in performance and handling over the standard Mustang GTs. This 1994 Ford Mustang SVT Cobra Pace Car Edition Convertible is No. 166 of 1,000 Pace Cars produced for 1994, and it shows just 794 miles on the odometer, lending to its highly original presentation. In the current owner’s care since 1995, it is accompanied by a window sticker, buyer’s order dated January 11, 1995, brochures, an SVT specification sheet, SVT Certificate of Authenticity and an extra key. Although rare and of a high-performance nature, the SVT Cobra pace car editions were equipped with the amenities available at the time, including power windows, power locks, air conditioning, cruise control, a rear window defogger, the Mach 460 stereo system, a remote keyless entry system, leather interior and more, adding to their allure.
