The aggressively styled, third-generation Mako Shark Corvette returned for its third model year in 1970 but with the lowest production since 1962 because of a later-than-normal production start. The displacement limit was finally removed for Chevrolet’s big-block V-8 engines, with the top Corvette option now displacing 454 CI. Streamlined powertrain options now placed the triple-carbureted Corvette engines of 1967-69 in the past, as well as the fabled, limited-production L88. While potent 350 and 370 HP small-block engines were now available for 1970, 4,473 Corvette street-performance fans opted for the top-shelf RPO LS5 454 CI V-8 engine. Rated at 390 HP and 500 lb-ft of tire-melting torque, the LS5 mill was a startling bargain, with 4,473 Corvette buyers opting for the $289.65 option. In addition to the Corvette’s awesome performance potential with the LS5, this powerplant was highly drivable and easily maintained, described by Road & Track magazine as “… by far the most tractable big-block Corvette unit we’ve tried.” Sold new at Jack Douglass Chevrolet, this two-owner example is offered with the odometer reading 17,245 miles. Featuring eye-catching Monza Red paint with a black interior and two tops, including the original black soft top and a body-color removable hardtop, it remains in unrestored, highly original condition. Powered by the 454/390 HP LS5 V-8 engine paired with an automatic transmission, it also includes bucket seats, chrome bumpers, rubber floor mats and steel wheels mounting Deluxe wheel covers and whitewall tires. Highly decorated, this Corvette’s many accolades include Bloomington Gold Survivor, Gold and Gold Benchmark certification. NCRS honors include Chapter, Regional and National Top Flight awards, plus the Duntov Mark of Excellence, 5-Star Bowtie Preservation and Performance Verification awards. Additionally, this Corvette served as the cover car for the NCRS Judging Manual, 5th and 6th editions, as well as the poster car for the NCRS National Convention. At MCACN, the Corvette scored Triple Diamond honors. Excellent documentation includes the tank sticker (Corvette Order Copy), Protect-O-Plate, owner’s packet, a bill of sale and an NCRS-validated window sticker.
