Launched in 2004, the Pininfarina-styled Ferrari F430 heralded an array of race-derived aerodynamic breakthroughs, the products of state-of-the-art computer aerodynamic simulations used by Ferrari’s F1 team. A classic case of racing improving road cars, these changes improved fuel efficiency while reducing aerodynamic drag and lift. The DOHC 4308 cc V-8 engine of the F430 was all new, compact and lightweight, developing 483 BHP and explosively propelling the car to over 193 MPH. An unqualified tour de force of design and engineering, the F430 incorporated important new technical features, including the electronic differential (E-Diff) derived from the F1 team, plus the steering wheel-mounted rotary switch, or “manettino,” allowing quick changes among five possible drive modes, and a Magneti Marelli F1 paddle-shift gearbox. The F430 Spider launched at Geneva in March 2005, but Ferrari clients soon demanded greater performance, and Ferrari replied with the F430 Scuderia Spider 16M, commemorating Ferrari’s 16 Formula 1 Constructor titles. The 16M’s shrieking V-8 was uprated to 503 HP with a 6-speed F1 electro-hydraulic automatic transmission, yielding a top speed of 196 MPH. One of 499 produced, this limited-edition 2009 F430 Scuderia Spyder 16M bears S/N 169970 and is offered with just 141 miles at the time of writing. Graced by a factory-installed plaque identifying this example as the last car sold to the U.S., reflecting the information provided when the car left production, it is powered by a 4.3L/503 HP V-8 engine (No. 152199), paired to an F1 6-speed automatic transmission. Unforgettably finished in Giallo Tristrato PPG paint with Scuderia Ferrari shields, this modern Ferrari performance icon is accentuated by a power-operated Bordeaux convertible top and Pelle Bordeaux interior with Giallo Daytona-style inserts and stitched Cavallino motifs. A center console and Schedoni luggage are wonderful finishing touches, along with the 16 F1 Constructors World Championships and 2008 F1 World Champions badges, dual exhaust outlets, carbon fiber-coated roll bar, specially lightened bumpers and five-spoke forged alloy wheels with Ferrari center caps. Awarded Platinum and Best of Show honors at the 2018 FCA Pennsylvania Concours d’Elegance, this incredibly well-equipped 2009 Ferrari F430 Scuderia Spider 16M was ordered new by the Bachmans with its “brother,” the 430 Scuderia, at the same time in a matching color scheme. The underside of the decklid was signed by the assembly line staff, and accompanying items include Ferrari Classiche certification with the corresponding Red Book, Ferrari Vehicle Personal Data sheets, the window sticker and its books, manuals and tools.
