Produced from 1963 to 1965, the Porsche 356C in coupe and cabriolet form represented the pinnacle of 356 development, most notably in its change from the combined drum brake and wheel system inherited from VW to an all-new 4-wheel disc brake system, indicated by a new wheel design. Nimble and lightweight, the 356C was and remains an outstanding road car that rewards a light touch. Chassis No. 160007, this 1964 Porsche 356C Cabriolet was sold new by Precision Motor Cars of Los Angeles, California, on June 3, 1964 for $5,291.24. The buyer was David Weisz Co. of Los Angeles, who later famously held the colossal and historic 1970 liquidation of Metro- Goldwyn-Mayer studio properties—props, costumes, vehicles, posters, artwork, and more—that heralded the end of that giant motion picture conglomerate. Purchased off the MGM Studios lot in Hollywood by the second of its just two owners, the car has undergone an extensive restoration by long-time Porsche 356 marque expert and concours judge Thomas Drummond. The completed car now presents in concours-quality condition throughout, finished in handsome factory Code 6401 Slate Grey paint over a green leather interior. Body-colored bumpers with chromed trim strips and overriders, a chromed side mirror and luggage rack, chromed wheels with Vredestein radial tires and a black soft top with matching top boot advance this vintage California Black Plate Porsche’s sporting demeanor. An important feature is its original, matching-numbers 1582cc flat 4-cylinder engine (No. 712397), which is backed by a 4-speed manual transmission (No. 75786). The emphasis on preservation is also evident in such important items as the tool kit, jack and, inside the glove box lid, the fuse pouch and glycerin bottle, all of which remain original to this beautiful cabriolet. The interior is additionally nicely appointed for grand touring with a wood-rimmed three-spoke steering wheel, adjustable seat headrests, seat belts, an in-dash clock and a Blaupunkt AM/FM radio. Close scrutiny reveals the extraordinary measures taken in thoroughly detailing this rare 356C Cabriolet, which is also offered with the original purchase order, owner’s manual and warranty book, historic California registration and the original California Black plates.
