The Mustang Boss 302 was Ford’s secret weapon in Trans-Am Racing, allowing superb handling and balance with the right amount of power and torque to wind through the tightest of courses. A big part of the company’s success came from a spectacularly well-engineered chassis, including an independent front suspension, unequal-length A-arms, coil springs, an anti- roll bar, staggered shocks, front disc brakes and a live rear axle with semi-elliptic leaf springs. Although the Boss 302 was dominant on the race track, the high-winding characteristics lacked torque at low RPM, making it slower in a straight line. To help ensure more athleticism in that department, Ford made the Drag Pack equipment group available. The Drag Pack came with an additional oil cooler to help the engine stay cool under high RPM, a locking differential and the W-code 4.30 rear gear ratio. It is believed that only 262 examples of the 1970 Boss 302 were ordered with the Drag Pack. This example offered here for sale is one of the finest available ultra-rare Drag Pack Boss 302s in existence. As per the documentation, it was originally sold new at Ziems Motor Co. in Farmington, New Mexico, to its original owner. He used it sparingly and then sold it to his neighbor. It remained with its second owner in New Mexico until 1998. Factory ordered in the highly desirable Code D Yellow, as well as being factory optioned with the Drag Pack optional axle ratio, this example came with a host of the most desirable options the factory offered, including shaker hood scoop, sport slats, rear spoiler, convenience group, rim blow steering wheel, console, AM/8- track radio, decor group, tinted glass and tachometer. Very few of the original Drag Pack cars still retain their matching-numbers Boss 302/290 HP V-8 engine and matching- numbers close-ratio 4-speed manual transmission, which this example does. Having undergone a complete no-expense-spared rotisserie restoration, this Boss 302 is in concours condition. The paint has been wet sanded and polished to a show-quality finish. The engine compartment is fully detailed with correct litany of assembly markings and stickers. The undercarriage is finished just as nice as the top side and is reflective of only test miles since the completion of the restoration. Once the restoration was completed, this Boss 302 was taken to MCA judging where it was scrutinized by some of the most knowledgeable Mustang experts in the country and achieved MCA Gold status. Accompanying the sale of this special Boss is the build sheet, window sticker, owner’s manual, ownership history and a deluxe Marti report. This Drag Pack-equipped 1970 Ford Boss 302 is a no-excuse example that would be perfect for the astute collector who is looking for one the finest examples ever to come available on the market.
