Based on the “Heavy Duty 427” engine field-tested for Chevrolet by Roger Penske at the 1966 running of the 24 Hours of Daytona, the mighty 427 CI powerplant that soon gained fame as RPO L88 propelled the Corvette to international racing glory. First available for 1967, the L88 was factory-rated at 430 HP yet actually delivered more than 500. While listed on Chevrolet dealer order forms, the factory actively discouraged L88 sales to customers who were not professional racers. Optimized for high-RPM operation, the L88 427 CI engine breathed cold air through an aggressively bulged hood with functional cold-air induction. A choice of a 4-speed manual or heavy-duty Turbo Hydra- Matic 400 automatic was available with the L88, along with a variety of rear-axle ratios. Air conditioning, power steering, electric windows and even a radio were unavailable. Instead, mandatory “options” included heavy-duty brakes, F41 special-purpose suspension, K66 transistorized ignition and G80 Positraction. Just 20 L88 Corvettes were built in 1967, followed by 80 for 1968 and 116 for the final 1969 model year. Unrestored with 6,464 original miles, this example is one of 116 L88 Corvettes produced for 1969. The legendary 427/430 HP L88 V-8 engine is paired with an M22 4-speed manual transmission and 3.70 Positraction rear end. It retains the original exhaust system, and additional features include the J50 and J56 brake packages, F41 suspension, K66 transistorized ignition, radio delete and A01 tinted glass. Finished in Can-Am White with a black interior, it is enhanced by front fender louver trim, a white soft top and a black vinyl removable hardtop. Sold new at Lownsburg Chevrolet in Toledo, Ohio, to John Von Sprecken, this L88 was driven 6,205 miles within a year and then parked for the next 10 years. Subsequently, it was sold to Chip Miller in 1980, with the odometer statement showing approximately 6,200 actual miles. Part of the Chip Miller Collection from 1980 to 2004, the Corvette’s provenance includes the Ed Foss Low-Mileage Corvette Collection. Honors and awards include induction into the Bloomington Gold Hall of Fame plus the Bloomington Gold Earthquake L88 Special Collection, Bloomington Gold Corvette L88 Special Collection and the Bloomington Gold L88 Invasion Special Collection. The Corvette also earned a Regional NCRS Top Flight Award, scoring 97.2, and it was named Chip’s Choice (No. 306) at Corvettes at Carlisle. Documents include the original window sticker, Protect- O-Plate, Car Shipper, order form, dealer invoice and retail installment contract, and accompanying items include the original keys with punch-outs, an owner’s manual and the NCRS judging sheets.
