For many buyers, “the look” can be as important as the power, and when this 1970 Plymouth was built new, it got a balanced selection of color and optional equipment that is perhaps best termed “classy.” That model season, first for these cars, only 132 Cuda convertibles were produced with the 383 engine and Torqueflite automatic transmission, and this was actually among the first 20 Cuda convertibles to emerge off the production line. A former Hemmings Muscle Machines magazine feature car, it retains its original body, the matching-numbers 383 CI V-8 engine bored .040 over and original black vinyl interior. The engine “looks stock” but hides some upgrades. There are stealth aluminum heads and an Edelbrock Performer intake manifold painted orange, with a Demon 650 CFM 4-barrel carburetor under the 383 dual snorkel air cleaner and a Comp Cams valvetrain including an Xtreme Energy hydraulic roller camshaft. Stainless valves, the larger-capacity 440/Hemi oil pan, Mopar Performance electronic ignition and an OE-look custom U.S. radiator and aluminum water pump housing complete this, and yes, the original heads, manifold and carburetor are included in the sale. This is backed by the original matching- numbers Torqueflite automatic transmission and an 8 3/4 differential with Sure Grip and 3.23 gears. Power steering, power brakes, Hemi-grade torsion bars and rear leaf springs, and an AAR-spec rear sway bar complete the underpinnings. Now restored in original Lime Green Metallic, there is also a new black convertible top included separately. Inside, this car features bucket seats and center console, Slap-Stik shifter, Rallye dash with full instrumentation, wood grain accents, driver’s side mirror remote, three-spoke sport steering wheel and thumbwheel AM radio. Outside are the black hockey-stick side stripes, sport hood with pins, Go Wing spoiler, dual chrome mirrors, valance exit exhaust tips, road lamps and ribbed rocker mouldings. The upgraded set of 15x7 Magnum 500 wheels add just the right amount of chrome shine, and Goodyear F60-15 front and G60-15 rear tires keep it moving. The E-body Cuda convertible lasted but two years. This OEM-look example showcases some of its best traits … with benefits.
