Considered the best of the second-generation Corvette run by today’s collectors and enthusiasts, the 1967 models were initially slated for replacement by the restyled, third-generation “Mako Shark” design that year. However, the new car’s need for further refinement led chief Corvette engineer Zora Arkus- Duntov to successfully advocate for another model year for the existing design. While earlier second-generation Corvettes were designed and constructed with more ornate styling cues and trim, the final 1967 models are considered the most refined and stylistically “pure,” with past styling excesses replaced by a more sophisticated overall motif. For 1967, available power choices included a pair of 327 small-block V-8 engines and 4 big-block mills displacing 427 CI. A total of 22,940 Corvettes were produced for 1967, of which 14,436 were convertibles and 8,504 were coupes. Of all, just 3,754 Corvettes were equipped with the top available RPO L71 427/435 “Tri-Power” engine, including this compelling, matching-numbers example. Priced at $437.10, the solid-lifter RPO L71 428 V-8 powered 3,754 Corvettes and made it one of the hottest performers for 1967. Offered through 1969, RPO L71 was readily available from Chevrolet dealers, rated 5 HP higher than the “unobtanium,” race-intended L88 package. An uncommon collector find that retains its original Marlboro Maroon paint and black “Stinger” hood, this Corvette Coupe carries known ownership history, beginning with its purchase new by GM engineer David Kimball from Shalla Chevrolet of Detroit, Michigan, on January 19, 1967. Unrestored and stored in a climate-controlled environment since 1984, it is offered with the odometer reading 5,983 miles at the time of writing. It maintains the original drivetrain with factory stampings, including the matching-numbers 427/435 HP Tri-Power big-block V-8 engine, which also includes the “mandatory optional” K66 transistor ignition. A Muncie M21 close-ratio 4-speed manual transmission delivers the L71’s power to a Positraction rear axle. Other choice features and options include the F41 special suspension, N11 off-road exhaust system, and Rally wheels mounting 7.75x15-inch redline tires. The original black interior includes shoulder harnesses and an AM/FM radio. Having earned NCRS Top Flight status, this Corvette comes with a Bowtie Sign-Off for eligibility of judging at the next national event for the new owner. Documents include the Protect-O-Plate warranty card, the original NCRS-validated tank sticker, and a replica window sticker.
