“More legal” is a racing term, referring to taking an unexpected advantage. Oldsmobile was perhaps more legal when it came to cars like the one offered here: the 1969 Hurst/Olds. At the time, GM kept all intermediate models to a 400 CI limit; so, instead, Oldsmobile and Hurst Industries combined their talents to create a special dealer-sold package with 455 cubes under the hood. Subdued in silver and black for 1968, the 1969 model is best noted for its cubist scoop design that left no question as to its purpose, and the unique gold and white paint denoted Hurst’s involvement. One of just 906 produced that year, this 1969 Oldsmobile Hurst/Olds was the recipient of a frame-off restoration, features its original drivetrain and is documented with an Oldsmobile broadcast sheet. Sold new at Van Ness Oldsmobile in San Francisco, California, it is also a multiple award winner. The original, matching-numbers 455/380 HP V-8 engine under the hood shows off the special hood-seal air cleaner with trap door, chrome valve covers and firewall assembly line paint stencils. There is the original, matching-numbers Turbo Hydra-Matic 3-speed automatic transmission backing it up, and these cars came with the F41 performance suspension. There are power brakes with front discs and power steering here as well. The exterior, as noted, was exclusive to this model, and in addition to the scoop, there is a streamlined rear spoiler, special H/O emblems on the front quarter panels and decklid, round exhaust exits stylized with the rear bumper, and the HO 455 scoop declaration. Inside, this car came with headrest- equipped black vinyl bucket seats with gold detailing, burlwood applique, an in-dash tachometer, the special Hurst “His and Hers” Dual Gate floor shift integrated into the center console area, GM seat belts, a three-spoke sport steering wheel, and an AM transistor radio. Outside are correct T3 headlights, the Black SSII Olds-exclusive wheels and Goodyear Polyglas GT F60-15 tires, including a spare in the trunk. Coming with this Hurst/Olds are select books and manuals as well.
