Introduced at the April 1964 New York World’s Fair, Ford’s Mustang was the brainchild of Ford Division General Manager Lee Iacocca and Product Planner Hal Sperlich. Designed to compete with the then-popular Chevrolet Corvair, the Mustang pioneered the long-hood, short-deck styling that would soon be imitated by Ford’s competitors. Based on the Ford Falcon chassis and Fairlane mechanical components, the Mustang created a sensation with its performance, personal luxury and sporty styling, plus surprising affordability. The Mustang created its own market segment and, as a result, delivered the most successful new-car launch in automotive history. In large part, the Mustang’s appeal, in addition to its trim size and sparkling performance, was due to the incredibly long list of factory-available options and accessories. Two body styles were available initially, a notchback coupe and a convertible, while the 2+2 fastback soon followed by 1965. This factory A-Code specimen is a rare GT-optioned convertible that benefits handsomely from a professional concours-level restoration by MCA National Gold Card Judge Charles Turner, with the restoration completed using original and NOS components. In addition to its original, matching-numbers drivetrain comprising a 289/225 HP V-8 engine and Toploader 4-speed manual transmission, this high-specification Mustang convertible’s other highlights include power steering, front disc brakes with rear drums, independent front suspension with coil springs and a live rear axle with semi-elliptical leaf springs. Finished in Arcadian Blue, the Mustang’s other choice features include a power convertible top, Medium Blue interior, Rally-Pac instrumentation, a woodgrain steering wheel and glovebox- mounted AM/FM/CD unit. In addition to its original data plate, this Mustang is accompanied by an original owner’s manual, a CD with comprehensive restoration photos and an extensive document file containing invoices, photographs and known ownership history. The winner of the MCA Gold Award in the Concours Trailered class, this collector-grade, first-generation Mustang convertible includes a Letter of Certification from MCA Master Judge Charles Turner. Offered from a carefully curated, preservation-focused classic car collection, this outstanding, award-winning early Mustang convertible is ready to collect, show and enjoy.
