while enjoying delicious food and a social atmosphere centered on the love of the automobile (more information about this event can be found at midamericaclassiccougars.com). Fulfilling attendees’ desires for both camaraderie and philanthropy, there is typically a charitable cause served by the events as well, depending on the region hosting, and organizations to benefit from past events have included the Special Olympics and the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, to name a few. Since its expansion in the 1980s, the CCOA has consistently welcomed all interested parties to join the club; there is no exclusivity, meaning that any model of Cougar produced from 1967 to 2002 is welcome, and there isn’t even an obligation to own a Cougar. The only criteria for joining is having a love and appreciation for the Mercury Cougar lineage. But this opportunity is about more than just the cars. According to CCOA Chairperson Gavin Schlesinger and Vice- Chairperson of the Board of Directors Mark Kulwik, one of the best parts of being a Cougar Club of America member is the bonds that one creates. “You meet all these amazing people, and they become part of your extended family,” said Kulwik, and Schlesinger added, “We are social beings by nature, and being able to come together and interact with people, especially now, is important.” The CCOA consists of members from every avenue of life, some like Schlesinger who has a deep love for automobiles that are reminiscent of his teenage years and whose journey started with a Mustang, and others like Kulwik, whose first Ford-powered vehicle was a 1968 GT350 that he owned for 28 years. But eventually, both men found their way to the Cougar and haven’t turned back. With special interests in forming community bonds around a love for every aspect of Mercury Cougars, Schlesinger, Kulwik and all other CCOA members are always looking to welcome more diehards into their ever-expanding family. After 53 years of existence, the Cougar’s legacy is kept alive by organizations like the Cougar Club of America. Whether intrigued by the explosive colors, in love with the feel of the comfortable ride of a Cougar or enthralled by the exclusivity of some models, there is surely a place for anyone in the Cougar Club of America family.
