It was in the tragic wake of 9/11 when Leno hosted this motorcycle on the set of “The Tonight Show” in order to help raise money for the Twin Towers Fund, a charity supporting the families of first responders. During its tenure on “The Tonight Show,” the Dyna was autographed by a who’s who of the entertainment industry, including Jay Leno, Tom Cruise, Sylvester Stallone, Samuel L. Jackson, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Matt LeBlanc, Nicole Kidman, John Travolta, Nicolas Cage, Cuba Gooding Jr., Salma Hayek, Pamela Anderson, Earvin “Magic” Johnson, Mira Sorvino, Michael Richards, Terry Bradshaw, David Spade, Martina McBride, Ed Harris, Leelee Sobieski and Rodney Dangerfield. The autographs remain intact on this machine, making it a unique artifact of the early 2000s. After its Twin Towers Fund sale, the machine recorded only 248 miles from new, and it is in immaculate condition. The Dyna was the powerhouse of the Harley-Davidson lineup, with real-world street performance that made it a beloved and very popular machine for hard riders. With 1449cc, the Dyna Super Glide had 70 HP and was good for 105 MPH in stock trim, although legions of riders found the engine could easily be tuned for 100 HP or more, giving stirring performance. The Dyna became legendary as the basis of high-performance, big-bore Harley-Davidsons with a custom-motorcycle edge, befitting its origins in 1971 as the original factory custom Super Glide. The first FX Super Glide showed a clear inspiration from the extremely popular chopper scene with a raked-out front end and low saddle height, and a Sportster front end emphasized that this was a different sort of Harley-Davidson. The Super Glide became the most popular big twin of the lineup and an enduring classic that remained in the factory lineup through 2018, a remarkable 47-year run. With this particular example’s star-studded history still clearly displayed on its sleek Super Glide body, it’s an especially amazing—and certainly a singularly unique—collector motorcycle that would inject a new element of intrigue into any auto assemblage, no matter its size or contents. This 2001 Harley-Davidson Dyna Super Glide will be available for bids at Dana Mecum’s 33rd Original Spring Classic auction this summer in Indianapolis, so don’t miss the chance to make it yours.
