THE SPOKES MAN GREG ARNOLD A lifetime motorcycle-collecting hobbyist, Greg purchased his first motorbike at 11 years old from a neighbor in 1965 for $10. With his career background primarily rooted in the construction industry, Greg initially joined the Mecum team in 2011 to help remodel and expand Mecum Auctions’ Headquarters. In 2014, he put his passion for motorcycles to good use joining the Mecum motorcycle division as auction manager. Greg has two grown children, Ben and Violet, and lives with his wife, Cindy, in Mecum’s original hometown of Marengo, Illinois. WINTER WORK Yes, it’s winter. So what? Okay, those of us in this country and around the world located above the 40th parallel or so are probably not going for anything like a “comfortable ride” anytime soon. In my part of the country, I usually wait until the road salt and curve sand is washed away by the spring rains, helping to ensure that both my motorcycle and I survive at least a little while longer. So, what else is there to do? Hmm, let’s see … how about catching up on the work still needed on those project motorcycles? That’s a good idea. This time of year, those outside maintenance chores are mostly impossible, resulting in fewer interruptions to the really vital work of motorcycle restoration and repair. It’s also a good time to find and purchase parts online. What else? Well, why not use this time to add to your collection? All ranges of collector motorcycles are represented at Mecum auctions, from those held in Las Vegas to Glendale, Arizona, to Monterey, California, and beyond. Bidders have the opportunity to view and bid on the most desirable examples of vintage and collector motorcycles available, and there are also project-grade examples of very collectible bikes and virtually everything in between that consistently cross the auction block as well. While you’re at it, you can take a look at the bikes that already take up residence within your own collection and maybe pursue an even better example of a marque and type you already own. Or maybe it’s time to change your focus and begin collecting completely different motorcycles altogether, in which case sending your current crew across the block at an upcoming Mecum auction would be an excellent option to consider. We’d love to assist you in any way we can, whether it’s with auction valuation, reserve recommendations, trend conversations, or really anything to do with buying, selling and collecting vintage, antique and collector motorcycles; just contact us in the Motorcycle Division any time. Oh, and rest assured all my fellow Northerners around the globe: it will be riding season soon, so in the meantime, let’s get to work to make sure everything is ready to go. 84 • MECUM.COM
