1965 SHELBY 427 COBRA FAM COBRA FAM OF PAUL WALKER FAME Even in the rarefied world of genuine Shelby Cobras, this CSX1000 series 427 from Todhunter’s offering is a standout, one of just two built out of a planned production of 10 “FAM” edition examples. Personally commissioned by Carroll Shelby and part of a 14-car group produced by AC Motor Holdings (formerly AC Cars), its designation will be no secret to Shelby history buffs. The FAM moniker stands for “Ferrari’s ass is mine,” the promise Shelby was alleged to have made after losing the 1964 World Manufacturer’s Championship to the Machiavellian manoeuvres Ferrari engineered at the end of the season. True or not, the phrase has become yet another part of the mythology surrounding the Shelby phenomenon, and this 427 Cobra, CSX1010, builds on that jibe with the signature Ferrari color pairing of Rosso Corsa paint and a tan leather interior. Previously owned by the late actor Paul Walker of “Fast and Furious” fame, the car sports a hand-rolled aluminum body built by AC craftsmen and adorned with special “FAM 427 Special Edition” badges in place of the standard “Cobra” and “Shelby 427 SC” emblems. Powered by a matching-numbers Shelby 427 FE aluminum V-8 engine mated to a Tremec TKO600 5-speed manual transmission, CSX1010 is fully equipped to SC specification with rack-and- pinion steering, all-independent coil-spring suspension, remote engine oil cooler, a high-capacity aluminum radiator cooled by dual “pusher” electric fans, Wilwood brakes with Shelby calipers and a Shelby differential cover. A black-painted roll bar and matching side exhaust, black-painted quick jacks, “Tripod” headlights and Goodyear Eagle tires on Halibrand-style 15-inch 6-spoke pin drive wheels are trademark 427 SC details. The SC theme extends to the custom cockpit, which uses that specification’s dash layout with Carroll Shelby Signature gauges arranged with Lucas-style control knobs and toggle switches, a 15-inch original style wood-rimmed steering wheel, Ford T-bar shifter, heavy-duty competition lap belts and custom Shelby carpeting. As one of only two Shelby Cobra 427 FAM editions built, CSX1010 is a fascinating piece of Cobra history.
