Capable of speeds of up to 65 MPH, this automobile was an innovative masterpiece for the time and sold more than 3 million models by 1930—a feat that explains why some of today’s Model A aficionados are so attracted to the iconic automobile. Some of those admirers, so intrigued by the vehicle’s simplicity, beauty and effective design, went on to form clubs where the historic mode of transportation can be celebrated. One of those dedicated clubs is the Piney Wood Model A Ford Club, located in northwest Houston, Texas. The summer of 1977 opened the door for antique automobile fans across the lovely state of Texas, when club founders Keith Jenkins, Buddy Moore and Larry and Gwyn Machacek made the decision to form the Piney Wood Model A Ford Club (Piney Wood As, for short). A club dedicated to the Ford Motor Company’s second successfully marketed automobile, the original members consisted of eight families, and they held their first meeting at the Gulf State Auditorium in Conroe, Texas, and that’s all it took. After that initial meeting, the Ford-loving members were hooked. The Piney Wood As would go on to become a chapter of the Model A Ford Club of America (MAFCA) and a region of the Model A Restorer’s Club (MARC). Treasurer of the Piney Wood Model A Ford Club, Frank De Lucia, is infatuated with new adventures and the kind of company that comes along with being a member of the club. “Normally, when we don’t have a special event planned, what we like to do is drive, eat and drive some more,” he said with a laugh. “We enjoy trying to teach younger people what Model As are all about—the culture and what it was during that time period, how they dressed and how simple the vehicles were.” 92 // MECUM.COM
